Joost was born in the Netherlands in 1988 in a little town called Zutphen. Growing up, he was always busy swimming, busing around in the woods and enjoying nature outdoors.
At this time, the only photographs he took were with a film camera from friends and family. When he turned seventeen, he when on vacation to Spain and bought in a souvenir shop an underwater film camera, and he was sold! His girlfriend then got angry with him for spending too long in the water with his new camera. Coming back from the vacation, he found out only one photo came out a little bit good, a tail from a parrot fish. Because there was not much water around his home town, he took a break from his career to become an underwater photographer and study culinary school.
